Active Power Receives Order from Star Technology Services for Containerised Power System

Tuesday, October 21st 2008

Active Power, Inc., inventor and manufacturer of the most energy-efficient critical power systems in the world, has received an order from Star Technology Services for its modular containerised PowerHouse solution. One of the largest independent business to business (Internet service providers) in the United Kingdom, Star will install PowerHouse to provide its new mission critical data centre with energy efficient and reliable critical power protection. The power protection equipment is due to site by end of the year with the new facility expected to go live in spring 2009.

“Energy costs make up approximately 30 percent of Star’s total overhead,” said James Griffin, head of Hosting Strategy for the firm. “In fact, this cost has increased approximately 70 percent in the past 18 months. The fact we’re able to work with one contractor who can provide us a full turnkey power protection package with a high efficiency system is important to us. This high efficiency will directly impact our energy consumption and reduce our energy costs.”

Active Power will deploy the containerised system with its highly modular and expandable CleanSource® UPS (uninterruptible power supply), allowing Star to add capacity to the system as the data centre increases its capacity.

“Energy and space efficiency continue to be extremely important to data centre operators, particularly in the UK,” said Jim Murphy, vice president, Sales, EMEA for Active Power. “With the Star project, Active Power was able to tackle these concerns head on with the deployment of our PowerHouse system. The containerised unit is a continuous power system with rapid deployment capabilities. Energy and space efficiency, modularity, expandability and flexible placement are inherent benefits of the solution.”

Star Technology Services is scheduled to deliver a presentation at DatacenterDynamics London on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at the Royal Lancaster Hotel. The presentation will focus on driving efficiencies through rapidly deployed and right-sized power.
