First LEED CI Certification in Colorado Springs Goes to First Affirmative Financial Network

Monday, August 18th 2008

First Affirmative Financial Network, LLC, a leading provider of investment management and consulting services to financial advisers and their socially conscious clients, has built the first office in Colorado Springs to achieve a LEED® for Commercial Interiors (CI) certification.

First Affirmative’s 4,400 square foot office provides numerous green and sustainable features, including cabinets made from 100% recycled wood, use of regional materials, and natural lighting for 90% of the space. The office is near the Pikes Peak Greenway trail and has a bicycle rack and showers.

LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council as an independent, third-party rating system for sustainable tenant improvements to existing buildings.

“Our decision to build green is an expression of our values as a company and the values of many of our clients,” said George R. Gay, First Affirmative CEO. “All of us can make a positive impact by aligning our money with our values.”

Energy efficiency is an important part of the new office design. In addition to EnergyStar compliant office equipment, the company offsets 100% of its electrical use by purchasing 141 Mwh of wind power through renewable energy credits. First Affirmative obtained Green-e certified RECs from NativeEnergy.

“First Affirmative is to be commended for achieving LEED certification. This facility will be a showcase for high-performance and an inspiration for others,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President and CEO of the U.S. Green Building Council.

I’m currently studying for the LEED Commercial Interiors exam to earn the COVETED LEED AP designation!
It’s a tough road… but after Marine Corps boot camp at Parris Island, I think I can handle it!
